Support While Waiting for Assessment

You don’t have to put life on hold while you wait.

Across the UK, many children, young people, and adults are waiting months — sometimes years — for assessments or specialist support for ADHD, autism, and other mental health or neurodevelopmental needs.

For many families, the waiting period is one of the hardest parts:

  • Uncertainty

  • Emotional exhaustion

  • Feeling misunderstood

  • Little or no support in the meantime

At The Power of You, we provide non-clinical wellbeing coaching to support individuals and families during this waiting period — helping you stay grounded, supported, and able to cope day to day.

Who This Support Is For

This support is for:

  • Children and young people waiting for ADHD or autism assessments

  • Adults waiting for assessment or clarity around neurodiversity or mental health

  • Parents and carers supporting children during long waiting periods

  • Individuals experiencing anxiety, overwhelm, emotional dysregulation, or low mood while waiting

  • Families who feel stuck in limbo and unsure what to do next

You don’t need a diagnosis to receive support.

You don’t need to be in crisis.

 You just need support now.

What We Do and What We Dont

It’s important to be clear.

We do not:

  • Diagnose conditions

  • Replace medical, psychological, or therapeutic services

  • Provide treatment or assessment

What we do offer:

  • A calm, non-judgemental space to talk

  • Emotional regulation and coping strategies

  • Support with routines, organisation, and overwhelm

  • Strengths-based, neuro-affirming coaching

  • Guidance for parents and carers to support at home

  • Practical tools that help life feel more manageable

We work alongside NHS and private pathways — not instead of them.

How Support is Delivered

Support while waiting is offered through 1:1 wellbeing coaching, delivered online via Zoom or Microsoft Teams.

Coaching may include:

  • Individual sessions with the child, young person, or adult

  • Parent or carer sessions

  • Joint sessions where appropriate

  • Practical strategies tailored to real-life challenges

  • Optional involvement of schools or professionals (with consent)

Support is typically structured over 6–12 weeks, with clear focus and regular review.

Why Support While Waiting Matters

Waiting without support can lead to:

  • Increased anxiety and distress

  • Escalating behaviours or emotional shutdown

  • Family conflict and exhaustion

  • Reduced confidence and self-worth

  • Disengagement from school or daily life

Support during this time helps individuals:

  • Feel understood rather than judged

  • Build emotional awareness and regulation

  • Reduce overwhelm and frustration

  • Develop coping strategies that can be used immediately

  • Feel more confident and prepared for future assessments

You don’t have to wait to start feeling better.

A Neuro-Affirming, Compassionate Approach

Our approach recognises that:

  • Neurodiversity is not a deficit

  • Behaviour is communication

  • Emotional regulation comes before learning or change

  • People do better when they feel safe and understood

We focus on strengths, understanding, and self-belief, helping individuals make sense of how they think, feel, and experience the world.

For Parents & Carers

Supporting someone who is waiting for assessment can feel exhausting and isolating.

We support parents and carers by:

  • Offering space to talk openly and honestly

  • Helping you understand emotional and behavioural responses

  • Reducing self-blame and uncertainty

  • Providing practical guidance you can use at home

  • Supporting calmer, more connected family relationships

You’re not failing — you’re navigating something complex with limited support.

Working Alongside Other Services

Where helpful and appropriate, we can:

  • Support communication between home and school

  • Provide guidance that complements existing support plans

  • Help families feel more confident engaging with services

Everything is done with consent, clarity, and respect for professional boundaries.focused on staying true to our values and making space for thoughtful, lasting work.
